Interdependence

We proudly celebrate our independence as a nation, and honor those who defend freedom. A nation is only as strong as its individuals united; hence careful exercise of independence is important. There’s an ancient philosophy; “United we stand, divided we fall” (Aesop, 6th century BC, The Four Oxen and the Lion). We see, in all facets of society, individuals seeking connections in various groups, clubs, cliques and classes. Belonging to a healthy community (even a small bonded union of two), strengthens the individual to stand for those ideals which are shared within the group. This is why many of us prefer exercising in groups. A well-structured fitness group helps fill our need to feel part of something bigger than ourselves; like we aren’t alone. Bonds forged in groups help us feel understood and connected; realizing we aren’t the first to walk the difficult path upon which we stand. As in all things, balance is key. Both connectedness and independence are important ingredients in a successful program and can (even should), exist simultaneously. Independence might be better thought of as freedom (tomorrow we will celebrate United States freedom from British rule). We are clearly independent; we’re free to participate or not. When we allow it, we find that interdependence brings greater strength to persevere than we have when we go it alone. It’s a personal, independent choice to arrange your schedule so you’re able to exercise. It’s your choice as to whether or not you set the alarm an hour earlier, to make more time in your day for something you see as a high priority. You choose whether or not to be part of something you deem worthy of your effort to make connections. Once you choose to connect, it’s you who must reach forth your hand to open the door and step across the threshold to become part of the group. You choose to open your heart to the friendships of others, and by so doing, allow yourself to be supported and strengthened on your journey. This Independence Day, be grateful for your freedom to choose to stand with others, or to stand alone. The actions that follow your choice define your path and lead toward your destination (as I’ve encouraged before, when choosing your path, begin with the end in mind). Whether walking independently or interdependently, it is action, not simply desire, that will take you where you want to be. Remember, when you feel truly isolated, it’s because of your perspective. We’re in this life together and are connected in countless ways. As we celebrate independence, let’s celebrate healthy interdependence too. Embrace opportunities to connect. Recognize how we can remain The United, The Free and The Brave.
