Rememering Heather

Right around this time of year, every year, I get in a little funk. I know that isn't a real word. It's hard to describe, though. I'm not depressed. I'm not grumpy. I've been called preoccupied. Maybe that's it; Preoccupied. On the 12th of August, 1990 (a lifetime ago for some people), a small girl came into my home, having left the bosom of the Father to be my baby daughter, Heather. She was small, a little premature, but healthy and beautiful. She came on a Sunday. On the 9th of September, 1990 (a lifetime ago for some, but yesterday for me...), the Lord sent an angel to call Heather away from me and back to her heavenly home. It was around 2:00 a.m. The rest of us were sleeping. She left on a Sunday. The four weeks that sweet little girl was mine to hold were brief. Aurale Huff, my mother, I love her, and it's so hard to say good-bye...

Aurale (Lee) Huff 21 October 1927 – 9 January 2010 Aurale (Lee) Huff of Harwood, TX, passed away early Saturday morning at Seton Medical Center-Hays, in Kyle. Services were held at the Harwood Cemetery, Sunday, January 10, 2010. She was born in Harwood to Walter and Iva Huff and was preceded in death by her parents; two brothers, Walter Huff, Jr. and Wayne Huff; her sister, Martha Lewis; a son, John Holbrook; a daughter, Melinda Antuna, two granddaughters, Heather Windham and Carrie Antuna, and great-granddaughter, Kindra Albert. Being mechanically inclined, at the age of 25, Lee rebuilt a Hillman-Minx automobile engine with no help other than instruction from her father, who had built airplanes in Harwood while she was a small child. Lee learned her trade in the family newspaper business and, known as a “tramp printer,” travelled across the United States working in newspapers in Houston TX, San Francisco CA, Cincinnati OH, Detroit MI, Modesto CA, and San Antonio TX, where...

Too Soon Old. Too Late Smart

Let me share some advice given by two men; one young and one old: A young man asked one of my daughters, “How do you know when you’re successful?” She replied, “That depends on what your idea of success is.” He said, “Wrong answer.” He held that success is when you achieve your financial goals and have everything you could ever want that money can buy. He said, “Get a good job, save your money and get rich; that is success.” This young man is well loved and respected. He has a young wife and two children. He seems happy. An old man shared with me something he learned as a youth; “Too soon old. Too late smart.” During our visit, he shared stories from ‘back when.’ Reminiscing, he mentioned that he had turned down business and employment opportunities due to family priorities, more than once. He said he wanted to support his family, but wasn’t willing to leave them to do it.
